Celebrating Visionary Leader: Arunma Oteh

Oxford recently witnessed an extraordinary gathering to honour the life and work of Arunma (AEEM) Oteh, a trailblazer in global finance and development, an academic powerhouse, and a highly respected leader on the international stage.

Arunma’s 60th birthday celebrations brought together eminent thought leaders, policymakers, and influencers from around the world to reflect on her impactful career and to chart a path toward a more equitable, sustainable future.

A Tribute to Visionary Leadership

Arunma’s formidable reputation precedes her. From her tenure as Treasurer and Vice President of the World Bank to her pivotal role as Director General at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Nigeria, she has championed transparency, integrity, and innovative thinking. Her ability to converge high-level finance, academic rigour, and a steadfast moral compass underscores why so many consider her a visionary leader.

To celebrate God’s goodness in her life, the festivities highlighted her unwavering commitment to exemplary governance, world-class capital markets, and a people-centered leadership approach.

Better Leadership for a Better World

Day One’s forum, hosted in partnership with the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, convened a panel of international experts to discuss pressing global issues under the theme “Better Leadership for a Better World.” Conversations spanned:

  • Exemplary Leadership and its role in shaping transformative governance and economics
  • Leveraging Female Leadership to unlock potential, overcome barriers, and spark meaningful change
  • Unleashing Africa’s Potential by highlighting the continent’s wealth, innovations, and opportunities
  • Sustainability, emphasizing the urgency of a carbon-free world and the finance sector’s responsibility
  • Capital Markets and the need for robust, transparent systems to spur equitable growth

Central to these discussions was the unveiling of Arunma’s newest book, All Hands On Deck: Unleash Prosperity Through World Class Capital Markets, a clarion call for inclusive financial systems that empower communities and foster global prosperity.

A Night of Music and Celebration

That evening, the historic Sheldonian Theatre came alive with a captivating performance by celebrated Nigerian artist Flavour, whose fusion of African rhythms, highlife, and Afrobeat had the audience on their feet. The opening act by DJ Cuppy set an energetic tone, and the concert proved to be a fitting tribute to Arunma’s cultural and global impact – reminding guests that music, like finance, is a universal language that brings people together.

Thanksgiving & Reflection

Day Two began with a heartfelt Thanksgiving Service at Keble College Chapel, one of Oxford’s grandest ecclesiastical spaces. Surrounded by centuries of history, guests gave thanks for Arunma’s life, her faith, and the values that have guided her remarkable journey.

It was a powerful moment of reflection on how spirituality and purpose can shape leadership philosophies and public service.

A Grand Finale at Balliol

The celebrations culminated in a Formal Dinner at Balliol College, one of Oxford’s oldest colleges, where a special performance by D’banj electrified the evening. Against the backdrop of Balliol’s storied dining hall, invitees toasted to Arunma’s legacy, sharing anecdotes that illustrated her warmth, resilience, and unwavering vision for a better society.

Inspiration for a Better Tomorrow

Arunma Oteh at 60 embodies the spirit of continuous learning, collaborative leadership, and enduring faith.

Her life’s work – and the many tributes paid to it during this landmark occasion – serves as a reminder that real progress demands our collective effort: from nurturing future leaders to building sustainable capital markets.

As we reflect on the meaningful conversations, vibrant celebrations, and enduring lessons from Oxford, we are reminded that All Hands On Deck is not just the title of Arunma’s new book – it’s a call to action that we must all heed, to champion better leadership, and together create a more prosperous and inclusive world.

Happy birthday again to my dear big sister, mentor, Board colleague & Chair, plus as you beautifully put it, “Co-proponent of the importance of leadership to transforming society, and so much more”. Thank you for being beautifully, uniquely and unapologetically YOU. You are a blessing to so many of us and we love you!
