From Legacy to Future: Honoring Generations of Strength and Everything In Between, for International Women’s Day
From Legacy to Future: Honoring Generations of Strength and Everything In Between, for International Women’s Day
As we approach International Women’s Day (IWD), I find myself reflecting on the remarkable individuals who have played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today. This year, I want to celebrate not only the incredible women who have inspired me but also pay homage to the unsung heroes behind the scenes – my mother, father and daughters.
In my journey to build a more inclusive future for my daughters, I realise that the foundation of my strength and resilience was laid by the unwavering encouragement and championing of my parents. They ingrained in me the conviction that I possess fierceness and the ability to become anything or anyone I desire. For this, I am forever thankful.
Service-Fueled Roots and Self-Care Wings
Recently, during a heartfelt conversation with my mother, we delved into the contents of my vision board. To her surprise, among the myriad of aspirations, there were images of solid £ notes. In jest, I teased her, asserting that in running my business, I am essentially a version 2.0 of my parents. The values of service that run through my veins, thanks to them, have evolved into a service-fueled consultancy with self-care at the forefront.
Acknowledging the Past, Building the Future
My parents, two of the most beautiful souls I know, dedicated over 30 years of their lives to running a hospital in Nigeria. Unlike many others, their establishment operated more as a charity than a business – an embodiment of selflessness, sometimes at the expense of their own thriving. As the driver of this version 2.0 journey, I am committed to incorporating the essence of their service into my consultancy, with a newfound emphasis on self-care.
From Giants’ Shoulders to Future Horizons
Acknowledging that there would be no “me” without them, I’m learning that being version 2.0 involves knowing and asking for my worth. Giving remains a significant part of who I am, but I’ve come to understand that it cannot be at the expense of me.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I am reminded that I am standing on the shoulders of giants, building on the solid identity and foundation laid by my parents. It is my fervent hope that I will be around for a long, long time to continue to pass on these invaluable lessons to my daughters, ensuring that the legacy of strength, resilience, service and self-care endures for generations to come.
Together, let’s continue to build a world where EVERY woman feels empowered to be her authentic self, know her worth and be unapologetically fierce.
